For over twenty years, the Boulder Creek Festival has been the unofficial kickoff to summer in Boulder each Memorial Day weekend. Widely considered Boulder County's favorite event, the Boulder Creek Festival includes three days of festivities featuring a large variety of events, activities, food and entertainment unique to the Boulder community. Every year, Downtown Boulder shines brighter than ever when Santa “switches” on the lights illuminating the Pearl Street Mall, Boulder County Courthouse and star on Flagstaff Mountain. Over 35,000 bulbs will light up Pearl Street alone! Along the pedestrian mall, 35 trees with be adorned with LED holiday lights as well as the shade structure on the 1300 block and skyline silhouettes on Pearl Street at the intersections of 10th and 16th streets. Boulder Ballet's production of The Nutcracker combines traditional classical style with new characters, circus arts, and unique special effects. The choreography is meant to visualize Tchaikovsky's beautiful score in a way that is both classical and relevant to today's audiences. While many productions downplay the story of Clara (sometimes known as Marie) and focus instead on abstract dance, Boulder Ballet's production follows Clara as she grows from child to adult during the course of a dream, and Clara herself is involved in much of the dancing that happens around her. Clara is truly the center of the ballet.
