From LEED certification to zero-waste efforts to partnering with local nonprofits to give used amenities new life, below you'll find a list of local hotels that take sustainability seriously.
Boulder has been recognized by CDP, a global environmental reporting organization, for its bold leadership on environmental action and transparency. The city of Boulder has continually made the “Cities A List,” earning the CDP's highest rating, which just 120 cities in the world received in 2023.
St Julien Hotel & Spa
- Waste Reduction: Prioritizes zero waste goals with massive efforts to recycle and compost. Their waste diversion rate in 2023 was 50%, with the goal of increasing to 60% by the end of 2024.
- Energy Efficiency: The hotel continues to decrease their use of natural gas, electricity and hot water every year. They are actively transitioning to LEDs throughout the facility and utilize cold-water washing.
- Sustainable Transportation: RTD public transport and easily accessible electric bike rentals are available near the hotel. The hotel is located downtown and is very walkable.
- Green Certifications and Practices: Received the Bronze award from the Colorado Green Business Network, recognizing their dedicated efforts in sustainability.
- Water Conservation: The hotel implements a linen conservation program to save wash cycles. Each guest room and public restroom uses 2.0 gpf water-conserving toilets.
- Unique Features or Programs: There are two active beehives on the property, producing nearly 100 lbs. of honey each year, used at the on-site Jill's Restaurant. Partially used soaps and linens are regularly donated to local nonprofit partners. The hotel also hosts events multiple times throughout the year for various causes, like a "Hard to Recycle Day," for the community to drop off items that are not commonly recyclable to prevent landfill waste.
Hotel Boulderado
- Waste Reduction: Since beginning to manage their waste, they have reduced their landfill waste by 72%. Each room has clearly marked recycling as well as ceramic mugs and water glasses. The hotel has several five-gallon fill stations to refill reusable water bottles.
- Energy Efficiency: All hotel rooms, hallways and meeting rooms use LED bulbs. Every unoccupied room is inspected daily and the thermostat is set to the lowest energy usage.
- Sustainable Transportation: The Boulderado is just 2 blocks from the RTD bus station, which includes local transport as well as a bus that runs regularly to the airport. Green Ride also runs a charter service from the Denver International Airport to the Boulderado. Electric scooters, manual bikes and electric bikes can be rented across the street from the hotel. Additionally, the hotel has two EV charging stations free of charge for hotel guests. The hotel is located downtown and is very walkable.
- Water Conservation: The Boulderado has low-flow toilets in rooms and common areas as well as restrictors in showers. There are currently five water fill stations in the building with water from Eldorado Springs, a local company and water source, and the containers are BPH-free.
- Unique Programs: All employees have access to a free bus pass to ride local transport to and from work. The hotel also donates all used linens and partially used amenities from hotel rooms to two local homeless centers, churches and a women’s safe house.

- Waste Reduction: The Colorado Chautauqua's long-term goal is to be a zero-waste facility. They have extensive recycling and composting programs, which include equipping every cottage and public building with clearly labeled receptacles. Educational materials are also provided to guests to encourage waste diversion.
- Energy Efficiency: Facilities include measures to increase efficiency with insulation and air sealing, lighting, appliances, windows, heating and cooling, hot water and passive shading.
- Water Conservation: Rooms have high-efficiency toilets, low-flow aerators and low-flow faucets. They also utilize storm-water management techniques for landscape irrigation. The Chautauqua is currently converting to a high-efficiency irrigation system and developing landscape design guidelines specifying plant selections that are drought tolerant and generally indigenous to the Colorado Front Range.
- Unique Features or Programs: A Preservation Fee is collected to support the ongoing stewardship of this National Historic Landmark, including the preservation and maintenance of over 100 historic buildings and 26 acres of grounds, including dozens of heritage trees.

- Waste Reduction: The Lodge actively recycles through the city's recycling programs as well as less-common recyclables (ie: batteries, office equipment, etc.) through other outlets.
- Energy Efficiency: All rooms include low-flow shower heads and a linen/towel change program to reduce detergent and water usage. Long-life bulbs and energy-efficient lighting are used throughout the Lodge.
- Green Certifications and Practices: A-Lodge is currently in the process of becoming LEED-certified.
- Unique Features or Programs: The Lodge has an "Eco-Purchase Policy," which lists products specifically purchased based on their recycling content. The policy includes issues, toilet paper, office paper, napkins and paper cups.
The Bradley Boulder Inn
- Waste Reduction: With one of the smallest hotel footprints in Boulder, they produce very little trash, and recycle and compost everything possible, which includes food and yard waste.
- Energy Efficiency: HVAC systems are zoned individually by each room in the building, so hot or cold air is not being constantly blown through large ductwork.
- Sustainable Meetings: The Bradley specializes in small meetings of generally no more than 10-14 people. Wherever possible, compostable containers (cups, plates, etc.) are always used in meetings.
- Water Conservation: All sheets and towels are laundered on-site by staff, reducing out-sourcing, truck deliveries and other energy waste. The Inn uses water-saving washers and dryers, and sinks and toilets are all designed to be water-efficient.
