A residential district with a big heart, denizens of South Boulder are loyal to its laid-back lifestyle, foothills views, easy hiking trail access and esteemed national laboratories. The neighborhood is nestled into the foothills, with pine-dotted hillsides and dramatic mountain climbs to explore.
Things to Do
- Take a tour at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The rust-colored buildings are a fixture on South Boulder's horizon, with architecture designed by I.M. Pei (who also designed the Louvre pyramids in Paris). Inside, you can see some of the world's most advanced computers, touch a simulated tornado and admire beautiful views.
- Visit the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) building for a guided tour. They take place at 1pm each Tuesday and include stops at several working portions of the laboratory where you'll be the first to learn the national weather forecast.
The SKIP bus runs an easy route up and down Broadway — all the way from North Boulder, through downtown and to South Boulder — making it a great way to get to and from South Boulder. The Transit app will give you real-time updates and help you plan your trip.
- Grab a beer at Southern Sun Pub & Brewery, which serves up great pub fare and chill vibes, plus a large outdoor seating area with solid views.
- Meander around the scenic Viele Lake or play a round of disc golf at Harlow Platts Community Park.
- Hike the lovely Shanahan Ridge Trail through pine forests and rocky outcroppings.
- Pop into locally owned Neptune Mountaineering to peruse outdoor gear, enjoy a coffee at their cafe and even experience their in-store museum that includes equipment that’s been to the top of Everest.
